IB - Age 16-18

Universities worldwide respect the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as a challenging and desirable qualification and look for this credential on transcripts.

The IB Diploma Programme is a demanding two - year academic programme, widely recognised as the most challenging pre-university course of study and highly valued by universities throughout the world.

Scored out of 45 points, the IB Diploma program requires students to take six subjects:

  • A literature-based course
  • A world language course
  • A social science
  • An experimental science
  • A mathematics course
  • An elective: these may include visual arts, theatre arts, geography, history business management, economics, psychology, a second experimental science, a second language, and more

In addition, students must also complete three additional requirements:

  • The Extended Essay: A 4,000-word independent, primary research paper on a topic related to one of the six subjects being studied
  • Theory of Knowledge: A critical thinking course combining philosophy and reasoning
  • Creativity, Action and Service: Alongside their academic studies, students complete a range of extracurricular activities within 18 months based around Creativity, Action, and Service

NAIS Pudong teaches the IB as a core programme for students in Years 12 and 13 and teachers and staff have inspired students to exceptional success. For five consecutive years, NAIS Pudong students have achieved an average between 33 and 34 points in the IB Diploma Programme, significantly higher than the global average of 29.8 points. Some students have achieved scores of 44, putting them among the top 1% in the world. NAIS Pudong graduates excelling on the course have been accepted into renowned institutions such as London School of Economics, UCL, Parsons and Oxford.
