Our Principal Writes... A New Year Welcome

09 January 2014

Dear Parents, Welcome back. A Happy New year to you all from everyone at BISS Puxi.

I hope that you all managed to have a very relaxing and restful Christmas holiday and are ready for the New Year and new term?

As a result of the issues we had with air quality on and off in recent times, we are starting the year with a focus on our Clean Air Plan and making sure that we are doing everything possible to ensure the cleanest air for the students when they are on site and on their way to school. We are working with Honeywell to install the air purifiers which we already have in Early Years Cubs, throughout the primary and secondary schools commencing on 20 January. These will all be in place after the Chinese New Year break. We have also updated our Clean Air Plan which you can find on our website by following the link at the bottom of this blog post.

We are very pleased to welcome lots of new students this term with around 40 new families joining our community. We also have a small number of new teaching staff who have joined us.

Ms Marion Wong joins as our new 5P class teacher. Marion is from Scotland. She has a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design from Lincoln University before studying for a PGCE in Primary Education at St Martin’s College, Carlisle. She has previously taught in the UK, Guangzhou and Tokyo.

Mr Martin Game is acting Head of Secondary Music from January onwards. Martin has a BA (Hons) and has QTS. His musical ability is extensive, playing accordion, saxophones, clarinet, and flute as well as guitar, bass guitar, drums and piano to amateur and professional levels.  Martin has worked previously as Head of Music in BISS Pudong from 2009-2012.  He started work at BISS Puxi in August 2012 as an instrumental piano teacher and woodwind teacher.

Mr Kris Van der Mynsbrugge joins us as a Dutch Teacher.  Kris joins us from the Open School, Centrum Voor Basiseducatie, Antwerp, Belgium.  He has a Masters degree with Distinction in both History and Education from the University of Ghent and is a keen scout having gained much experience as a youth leader with Scouting Belgium.

Ms Madeeha Pitcher joins us to teach Chemistry.  Madeeha has a BSc. in Chemistry from the  University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA.  She joins us from the New Cairo British International School, where she has been instrumental in the successful implementation of the Chemistry IB programme.  In addition, as Head of Careers and Head of School Council, she brings with her valuable expertise.

I am also pleased to be able to report that we have secured a number of excellent new members of staff for next year from some very strong fields of applicants keen to join our team. I will be sharing some information about these new staff shortly as well as returning to the UK next week to continue the staff recruitment process.

As you will recall our Winter Wonderland event had to be postponed last term and has been rescheduled for 25 January and will now have a Chinese New Year feel to it. It will be a great chance to catch up after the holidays and get involved in some Chinese New Year celebrations at the same time. Look out for more information in the coming week and there will be further opportunities to buy raffle tickets for the highly sort after PTA raffle baskets.

Finally there are various different opportunities over the next few weeks for parents, existing and new, to come into school to meet staff such as coffee mornings and parent information sessions all of which are listed on the calendar on our website.

I look forward to catching up with you over the next couple of months.

Kevin Foyle, Principal
