New Staff In Our Mandarin Department and Assistant Head, Global Languages

23 June 2014

We are very pleased to have some new staff joining us next year in our primary and secondary Mandarin departments, as well as to introduce a new role of Assistant Head, Global Languages.

Fiona McConnon, Pei-hua Li and Rain Xu.

We would like to introduce you to these new staff and their positions in the school: Fiona McConnon, Assistant Head, Global Languages; Pei-hua Li, Head of Secondary Mandarin and Rain Xu, Primary Mandarin Teacher.

Fiona McConnon, Assistant Head, Global Languages

Fiona McConnon will be joining us in August as Assistant Head Global Languages.  This is a new whole school position and is keenly awaited.  Fiona is a highly qualified teacher of French and Mandarin with a Master’s degree in the Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language.

Fiona joins us from Northwood College, a prestigious girls’ independent school in London, where she was Head of Faculty for MFL and Classics.  In addition she has lived and worked in China on and off for a number of years and has extensive management experience.

She has developed teaching materials for the teaching of Mandarin with a focus on fun and meaningful communication which has had a significant positive impact on the interest levels and attainment of non-native speaking students.

Her remit will be to lead and further develop the rich and diverse language provision including native and non-native Mandarin, Dutch, French, German, Korean and Spanish. She is very excited about this new challenge and the new life for her family in Shanghai.

We are also pleased to welcome Pei-hua Li as Head of Secondary Mandarin and Rain Xu as a new Mandarin Teacher in the Primary School.

Pei-hua Li, Head of Secondary Mandarin

Pei-Hua has a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature from Nanjing Teachers’ University.  He also has a postgraduate degree in Applied Psychology from Suzhou University as well as his China National Teacher’s Certificate and National Putonghua (Standard Mandarin) Certificate Level 2, Grade A.

Pei-Hua joins us from the Shrewsbury International School, Bangkok where he taught Mandarin.  He has over twenty years teaching experience and has developed a very successful method of teaching he terms the ‘Hop Skip and Jump’ Method.  His success lies in his unique and exciting approach to teaching and learning.

Pei-Hua has adopted a multi-faceted approach to teaching, including CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) using multimedia to make learning enjoyable and effective.  He has compiled textbooks that focus on what the student needs to learn and use in daily life, and he describes his teaching style as humorous, passionate, creative and accommodating of different learning styles.  In addition Pei-Hua is well known for his unique insight into Chinese culture and places the language in context so that students not only know how to say things, but also know why Chinese is put in such a way.  He is excited about returning to China and Shanghai and joining BISS Puxi to lead our Secondary Mandarin team.

Rain Xu, Primary Mandarin Teacher

Rain has Bachelor degrees in Information Science and Library Management as well as Chinese.  She is currently teaching at Dulwich College Seoul where she teaches Mandarin from Foundation up to Year 6. Here, she has been involved in the development and implementation of a new Mandarin Curriculum.

Her style of teaching is interactive and she uses a variety of teaching styles to engage her students.  She is keen to share with the children her knowledge and experience of Chinese Culture and celebrations including Dragon Boat and Chongyang Festival.
