Our Principal Writes: A Host of Exciting Experiences

27 February 2015

The excitement of the Chinese New Year celebrations at school before the break has been replaced by the excitement surrounding two very good examples of the benefits of being part of the world’s leading premium schools’ organisation.

Firstly as you will have seen this week we have entered into an exclusive performing arts collaboration with the world famous Juilliard School of New York City. This is undoubtedly a fantastic development which will provide truly world class performing arts opportunities for our students. Initially, this will be from September 2015 at the schools chosen to pilot the collaboration, including ourselves and in due course across the family of 31 schools.

This week also sees the launch of the Nord Anglia Education Global Orchestra which will assemble in June in New York, comprising 93 students from across our 31 schools. During the week long camp, students will spend some time with the world famous Juilliard School of New York City. You can find more details about both of these initiatives by following the links below.

Another of the many exciting educational opportunities that come from the Nord Anglia Education (NAE) family of schools is the trip to Tanzania which departs this evening. A group of 34 Year 9 and 10 students with four staff are setting off to the Shamba Kipara Camp in northern Tanzania.  Alongside students from other NAE schools in China, Cambodia, Doha, Thailand, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, they will be undertaking a variety of educational exercises and adventures led by Mr David Wall the NAE Head of Expeditions as well as undertaking some important community service as part of  our established projects supporting disadvantaged and orphaned children in the area. The students have raised in excess of 150,000 RMB that will be put towards projects at the Seeway Orphanage project and Imbaseni primary school.

We are always looking for local extended education opportunities and exciting experiences. The Manchester United Soccer School to be held in June and July at BISS Puxi and BISS Pudong is one example, and next week I have the honour of attending the Chinese premier of the new British comedy film, “Paddington” directed by Paul King, with the five winners of the primary school’s Paddington Bear Art Competition. Along with artists from other schools in the city we will be welcoming HRH Duke of Cambridge who is the guest of honour at this prestigious event.

Finally next week we have the honour and pleasure of hosting the Federation of British Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) Primary Maths Challenge. Teams from 32 schools, including two of our own, from across the Far East and South East Asia will be undertaking a variety of mathematical challenges over the course of the two days of the event.

There continues to be a great deal to look forward to, to enjoy and indeed to celebrate.

- Kevin Foyle, Principal
