Igniting the Passion for Reading

  • Igniting the Passion for Reading

Chris Bradford, nominated for over 30 book awards and winner of the 2014 Brilliant Book Award, visited BISS Puxi last Wednesday and Thursday to talk about his books and writing. This was no ordinary book talk. Chris employs a technique he terms 'method-writing', which means he trained to be a Samurai warrior to write his Young Samurai series and he is a full member of the British Bodyguard Association. He certainly knew how to hold the attention of audiences of 200 hundred students. All ages were spellbound as he demonstrated, for the older students secret bodyguard techniques and accompanied book readings with a dynamic all kicking all punching book reading. The younger children were treated to an authentic samurai sword display and their own ninja skills were tested. Chris explained how he bases his books on authentic research and that his overarching desire is to bring excitement and a love of reading to all children. His action packed series are aimed at very different audiences and so were his performances. For the younger children, reluctant readers and second language learners the Ninja series invites children to become involved in missions. Young Samurai for more mature children aged 10 and up is set in 17th century Japan, where Jack Fletcher is shipwrecked. In the final Bodyguard series, for older teenage readers who enjoy Alex Rider stories, a 14 year old bodyguard is assigned to protect teenage celebrities. Each series of books is underpinned by not only authenticity and historical information but also a strong moral code, which was promoted throughout Chris's performance.

Captivating stories, fast paced action and adventure, providing the ultimate exciting experience for everyone!
