The first group were given a set of ready-made instructions on how to build an alien out of Lego and the second group were instructed to be creative and build their own alien robot.
It was great to see the first group working together as a team. They communicated well, took turns to complete the challenge and really cooperated well together. The “design your own” groups came up with some amazing creations and the children’s imaginations and creativity really came to life. Some groups even extended their challenge to create transport for their aliens.
Once they had successfully built their robot alien or mode of transport, they were shown how to use the Ipads and laptops to program their Lego masterpieces to move. The children used a programming tool to make their creation move in different directions and for varying lengths of time. They followed a set of instructions to begin with but all adapted well to this challenge, so then began to explore and design their own. Some groups even began to investigate adding sounds to their program.
It was wonderful to see the children working so well together and to witness their creativity. Their individual personalities really began to shine through in their creations. They became really excited when their programming worked and their alien moved. It was a great opportunity for them to develop problem solving skills and perseverance, as well as having the experience of working with such great equipment and technology.
Mr Jarrett was impressed with the children’s level of concentration, enthusiasm and determination. I am extremely proud of their mature attitude during this challenge and their commitment to making their project a success! We also found a hidden talent in our wonderful Learning Assistant- Miss Li, who apparently is a computer whizz!
1G thoroughly enjoyed their morning and they are very excited for their next Lego WeDo adventure. We would like to say a big “Thank you” to Mr Jarrett for his planning, support and involvement in this exciting, new project.
