What a Show!

02 March 2017

During the past seven weeks all of the Shanghai Dutch School students from Pre-Nursery through to Year 10 have worked hard around their topic of  “Theatre”.  Even the younger children learned everything there is to know about Knights and Princesses.

All the student learnt about how to become a real knight ( rules include "don’t burp", "treat women nicely", and always "eat with knife and fork!"…), studentas also memorised the 10 commands of Knighthood. They got to hear about famous stories  such as "Little Eve Dark Blue", "The Princess and the Pea" and "Floris and the Dragon". Key Stage 2 students studied Medieval Dutch texts about "King Charles the Great" and "Reynaert the Fox" students were able to turn text into a theatre script, including stage directions. Key Stage 3  students and Year 10 re-wrote the 17th century play ‘Gijsbrecht van Amstael’, by the famous author Joost van den Vondel and turned it into a modern play. The story remained the same but now includes an X-Box, President Trump (‘It’s amazing, it’s great, I’m telling you!’) and cell phones.

Last Wednesday night all the stories came together in a big assembly. Over 70 students aged from 2 – 15 year old participated and our Dutch and Belgian parents were a very thankful and supporting audience. Who knew that Shanghai Dutch School students were so talented!
