Creativity Has No Boundaries

01 September 2017

After two weeks back at school it is as though we have never been away. All week I have seen students enthusiastically playing tag rugby, creating impressive digital music compositions in our Music Technology suites, exploring STEAM learning in our new Da Vinci Centre and grappling with complex graphs on their iPads. It turns out that there is no limit on creativity.

It never ceases to amaze me how a school comes to life with the vibrancy of youthful enthusiasm. I don’t think it is just the energy levels of our students that beings this exuberance, although that certainly helps. It is more the attitude to life that they bring that seems to breathe life into the school. In one lesson after another throughout the school, both secondary and primary, I saw and heard students engaging with their learning with excitement and enthusiasm. “That’s really cool,” said one student as he listened to his partner’s music composition, “I love this!”. Really, what more could we ask for a positive approach to learning?

Positivity is so key to great learning. In fact it is fundamental to all our lives, whether we are at school or not. Positivity is also, I believe, directly proportionate to the enthusiasm with which we approach challenges, whether educational or otherwise. A healthy sense of commitment to finding solutions, to exploring ideas and collaborating with other thinkers is a prerequisite to having a positive approach to life and simply manifests itself as being one of life’s ‘enthusiasts’.

As I survey the school, full of enthusiastic teachers and learners, I am impressed once again with the joy that learning brings, and once more, I feel the enthusiasm of youth. Which only goes to prove that enthusiastic, creative learning really can work miracles!
