Week Beginning 22 February 2016

Swimming - During the winter months, girls are allowed to wear black leggings and black socks instead of tights under their dresses/skirts on Swimming days. This will make it easier for the girls to change before and after lessons.

MESSAGES

Maths week - Below is a guide to events which we would appreciate your support with. These involve raising money to support the Qing Pu Xiulong Migrant School in teaching Maths.

  • On Friday 26 February, please send in as many 1 yuan coins as you can spare. The children will be using their estimating and measuring skills to create 3D mathematical signs and shapes out of coins.
  • Tuesday 23 February, please bring in biscuits and cakes to sell at the Year 2 Bake sale- these can be given to class teachers to organise.
  • Friday 26 February, please bring in 20 Yuan to buy cakes and biscuits at the Year 1 Bake Sale.
  • Finally a reminder that it is Maths Hat day on Friday 26 February. We look forward to seeing all the children’s creations and taking lots of great photographs!

On Friday 25 March we will have the International Day parade. Children will have the opportunity to dress in their national costumes or in the colours of their home country.

Uniform:  Now that it is colder in the mornings please remember that children should not be wearing leggings, boots or hoodies.  They should be wearing school jumpers/cardigans/fleeces and NOT non-uniform versions.  Information is available on the Primary Parent Handbook on the website.

LITERACY

Over the next two weeks the children will become cartoonists! We will begin the week by learning how to use speech bubbles. Once the children have learnt this skill we will examine how to use inverted commas for speech. In readiness for our trip to the Shanghai Art Museum we will look at the Qingming Festival scroll and add speech marks to a huge print of the scroll. When we visit the art museum we will watch a film where the scroll is bought to life.

MATHS

This week is Maths week! With a focus on fractions, the children will be completing several fun activities to bring maths to life in our classrooms! In addition to this, the children will be buying and selling cakes to help them apply their knowledge of money.

THEMED LEARNING

In Themed Learning we  will be learning about sound and how we hear. The children will be given different opportunities to explore: how the ear works; discussing how different people communicate; creating their own hearing tool to improve someone’s hearing capabilities; making a paper cup and string telephone; and looking closely at sound waves and how they travel.

VOCABULARY

Literacy – inverted commas for speech, commas, said.

Maths – fractions, halving, quarters, ratio,.

Humanities – I movie, fact, opinion
