  • PE and swimming are a core part of our curriculum. All children should take part unless they have a note from a doctor or a parent to excuse them. When children are not taking part, we ask that they still bring their PE kit as we can adapt the lesson for them.  We can often include them in the lesson as a coach, a referee or to give feedback to others. If your child would be swimming, they should bring their normal PE kit.
  • Please remember to send in and label your child’s snack box and water bottle, as well as a hat during the hot weather.

In Literacy this week Year 5 will be reading stories from different cultures. This will link into our themed learning topic as we discuss villages life and different cultures from around the world. The children will learn about  the structure and features  of the texts as well as focusing on character descriptions. The challenge will be to apply what they have learned in their own writing.

In Maths this week, we will be focusing on identifying and recognising factors and square numbers, as well as recapping on long multiplication. Most children will be reviewing the standard compact column multiplication method. We will also be looking at mixed multiplication and division problems so that children can begin to apply their mathematical skills. We recommend children practise their multiplication facts at home as they will be doing this during Maths warm ups in school.  Towards the end of the week, we will be discussing how these strategies, methods and skills could be applied to ‘real-life’ situations.

‘Building a Village’

This will be our first week with iPads at school so we will teach a range of lessons on their safe and responsible use, particularly focusing on E Safety. We will also begin their Art unit for themed learning. In groups the children will learn about different types of villages from around the world. They will reflect on last week’s work, thinking about the different types of villages studied and use these ideas to create a plan for their own model village. We will begin theconstruction of our own miniature settlements. Students will be learning new art skills as they construct complex 3D models using a range of techniques to form a realistic geographic landscape. This will be a multi-step process and require excellent teamwork skills.

Our focus this week in PHSCE will be looking after our possessions and how to make the correct choices when on the internet.

Literacy – traditional, narrative, ‘Just So Story’, structure, layout, character description.

Maths – multiplication, division, factors, square numbers, compact column multiplication

Themed learning – plan, design, refine, village styles, landscape
