We offer a comprehensive programme for native speakers of a range of languages. For some languages we provide classes within lesson time, and for others we provide sessions as part of our extra-curricular programme after school.
Dutch and Belgian students study Dutch as part of our Shanghai Dutch School programme. This covers language, geography and history, as part of a formal programme approved by the Dutch Education Ministry.
In primary students can take native French and Spanish as part of our extra-curricular programme. For German, we currently offer native classes on timetable.
In secondary school, we offer an after school programme for students from Year 7 upwards. These classes help to maintain and develop a proficiency in reading and writing. Students can study for native IGCSE examinations at the age of 16.
Students may also wish to continue their native European language in the International Diploma Programme, finishing with a bilingual IB Diploma. To do this, they can select the native language as a self-study literature option. It is offered at Standard Level. Students would find a tutor and study the literature with this tutor.
Please see the information on native Chinese and Korean programmes in the Asian languages section of the website.
