LITERACY
This week we will be reading the book “We’re Riding on a Caravan, An Adventure on the Silk Road”. This will be a great introduction to our new Silk Road topic and will introduce the children to the history of this period. The children will learn about the different places along the Silk Road and find out what items were traded and why this network was so important.

MATHS
This week the focus will be on reading data from tables and timetables. The children will calculate time differences and work with both train and flight timetables, taking into account time zones. They will also learn about two way tables and how to interpret more complicated information. A focus of the week will be to present data in an ordered effective format.

THEMED LEARNING
This term our new Themed Learning topic is the Silk Road. The children will start to learn about this important trade route. They will begin a knowledge harvest by sharing what they already know about this topic and willask questions about what they want to find out over the course of this term. We will be preparing for our exciting Entry Point to the topic. The children will be making goods to trade at the market (souk) and will get ready for their long walk around school. The children will be making carriers for their goods and lanterns and flags so that each merchant group can be easily identified.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND DIGITAL LITERACY
We are starting the term thinking about E-Safety and how to keep our personal information safe. We will be learning about the the Zip it, Block it, Flag it strategy used by the UK council, which teaches us top categorise how safe information is and what to do if we see information we should not.

PSHCE
In PSHCE this week we will focus further on fostering new relationships, creating rules and expectations for the group and how to work together successfully. We will reflect on what we achieved last term and discuss new personal targtes for the term ahead. We will also welcome some new children to Year 5 and will discuss how we can be helpful in settling them into their new school.

After the holidays, we will start our pen pal project with the British International School of Ho Chi Min, creating a video about what our school looks like and presenting a regular school day at BISS Puxi. We will brainstorm about the topics we want in the video and we will make a mind map of the vocabulary we will need for our presentation.

Diese Woche ging es feierlich, entspannt und vorweihnachtlich zu. Die Kinder haben neue Bücher für die Ferien ausgeliehen und haben Weihnachtskarten für die Eltern gebastelt. Toll wäre es, wenn die Kinder die Bücher in den Ferien lesen und dazu in ihren Lesetigerheften etwas malen oder schreiben würden. Es ist natürlich kein Muss, da sie zu allererst ihre Ferien genieβen sollen. Frohe Weihnachten und gesegnete Feiertage!

DUTCH
Blijspel
De komende weken werken de leerlingen aan een nieuw thema ‘Blijspel’. We kijken naar verschillende teksten en proberen die te herschrijven tot theaterstuk. De leerlingen werken van hun favorieten verhaal de verhaallijnen uit, maken een rolverdeling en zullen hun blijspel uiteindelijk opvoeren voor alle ouders.
Ook bereiden we ons voor op de Cito-toets die vanaf 13 februari zal worden afgenomen. We toetsen de onderdelen technisch en begrijpend lezen, woordenschat en spelling.
