Week Beginning 12 March 2018

MESSAGES

  • International week: On Thursday 29 March at 9:00am the International Parade will take place in the Primary front playground. Students are invited to wear clothing that represents their cultural heritage. If you are able, please come dressed in your national costume and cheer on. Our Chatterbox coffee shop will be open for parents to enjoy a beverage or snack.
  • Please make sure that all snack boxes, bottles and clothes are labelled. We have a number of children who have the same items, and they become confused when they cannot tell which is theirs. This will also aid us in returning lost clothes to their owner.
  • When sending in grapes, please make sure they are sliced into smaller pieces, to avoid choking.
  • Please do not send glass containers into school in case they are broken, as this leaves shards of glass on the floor which is dangerous to the children. We cannot let the children use glass containers and will have to confiscate any which are brought.
  • Please make sure your child has at least three spare sets of clothes (t-shirt, trousers/skirt, underwear, socks and jumper), to allow us to change your child if needed.
  • Thank you for your patience when picking up your child after lunch and at the end of the day. For the safety of the children, we send them out one by one after we have seen the caregiver who is picking them up.
  • Swimming: Please remember swimming is on Tuesday! IT’S FUN! IT’S WARM! IT BUILDS WATER CONFIDENCE FOR THOSE CHILDREN WHO ARE TOILET TRAINED!
  • Thanks to those of you that attended the Parent-Teacher Conferences. Some of the you have been asking about ways to help your child practise English at home. A few ways are by asking them to follow simple instructions, reading stories together or singing.

These have some repetitive language and the children enjoy joining in. We have been trying to expose them to both English and Mandarin versions where possible.

OUR LEARNING THEMES

Each teacher will plan learning experiences that link to the readiness and interests that they observe in the children in their class.  While these separate themes operate in each room, the children know they are free to choose to work in another room.  The planning is specific to each classroom, but not confined to that class, so children have many rich opportunities available to them across the three classrooms.  Mandarin teaching will link into each theme, with the Mandarin speaking staff introducing specific language, books and songs.

TIGER AND POLAR BEAR CUBS

In the Tigers’ class, the children have been very excited about making roads and bridges from different blocks and materials.  They have also used the blocks as stepping stones and made paths to walk on.  During PE they used rubber spots to create more pathways to move around the equipment.  Next week we will encourage this by reading the story of the ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ and building bridges for the three goats. Across the unit we will be focusing on counting and vocabulary related to it by singing ‘Five Little Ducks’.

In the Polar Bear room the children have been interested in combining small world people and furniture with the mini building blocks. Next week we will enhance this by encouraging children to build enclosed spaces for people or animals using different sized blocks and different types of building materials. We will incorporate counting into their play by asking questions such as ‘How many blocks? How many more.. Let’s put on one or two?’ etc  Some children have been practising their throwing skills and we will encourage this by using beanbags and targets such as hoops, soft spots and buckets, both inside and in our outdoor environment.

BADGER AND BOBCAT CUBS

The children in Bobcat Class have shown a real interest in sea animals this week. Next week we will be looking at different sea animals and the sensory area will be all about the ocean. There will be sensory bottles for the children to explore the movement of water and there will be lots of creative activities involving fish and other sea animals e.g dolphins, sharks and squid etc. Our book of the week will be ‘Rainbow Fish’.

In the Badger Class, we will continue to learn about dinosaurs, as well as starting a focus on counting. The children are still enjoying ‘Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus!’ by Tony Mitton, and we will continue to read this as a class. We have also been singing ‘Five Little Ducks’ and ‘Five Speckled Frogs’, which we will continue to learn. We will also start to reinforce this number language, by counting objects in the room.

This week we are going to talk about spring and read the story ‘The Very Hugry Caterpillar’.
