Primary Class Teacher

After graduating from the University of Greenwich with a first-class degree in Education Studies and a PGCE in Primary Teaching Charles has been teaching in Central London for the past 3 years. Teaching in deprived areas of London may have felt like being thrown in the deep end, but he has followed and worked with excellent practitioners towards the strong teacher he is now. His previous school, Nightingale Primary School followed the Singapore approach to teaching Maths which fascinated him and drove him to eventually work with the local maths hub as part of a research group. Charles has since been using his skills to model lessons and develop curriculums with schools in south east London who are looking to enhance their own teaching towards mastery in maths.

At Nightingale Primary School Charles began studying education at MA level and was fascinated by the current research surrounding reading and writing. He firmly believes that fostering a love of reading is a key responsibility for teachers.

Charles decided to make the move to Shanghai after speaking with two Shanghai teachers who visited his school as part of a project with the UK Maths Hub. He was able to observe the Shanghai approach to teaching maths and have been incorporating it into his own lessons ever since. The opportunities in Shanghai sounded amazing and he is looking forward to developing his classroom teaching further.

Charles enjoys reading books (especially those written by Kurt Vonnegut), cycling, playing Nintendo games and listening to music. He enjoys keeping himself up to date with current research around education (his previous deputy head and he had rival book cases of research texts) and aspire to read towards a PHD. He is looking forward to making links with teachers across Shanghai as he is enjoying his current efforts to merge the Shanghai and British maths curriculums.
