    For the last eleven years Alex has worked as both Year 3 and Year 4 teacher at King’s College Madrid.  For the past five years she has also been Lower Key stage 2 Coordinator.  Besides being a class teacher, she has also held other posts of responsibility, such as Humanities Coordinator and English Coordinator in Primary, Primary School Representative for Extra-Curricular Activities, and House Parent in the Boarding school.

    Chloe Worley

    Chloe qualified from the University of South Wales with a BA (Hons) in Primary Studies in 2012. Following this, in 2016, she went on to complete a Masters in Educational Practice at Cardiff University. Chloe has worked for 6 years in Newport in a large multi-cultural school and worked across the Primary age range. For the past 3 years her role has been Middle Phase Leader, managing a team of staff and pupils from Year 2 - Year 4. Chloe has also led Mathematics and Numeracy, Assessment and pupil voice across the school. She is a very passionate teacher and leader with high expectations of her staff and pupils. She is highly ambitious and driven, always seeking new challenges.

    Daniel Baumber

    Dan graduated with a PGCE from Bishop Grosseteste University College, Lincoln, UK, in 2007, and has been teaching for over 10 years. He has taught and led a range of year groups across the Primary School phase during this time, in schools in London, Bangkok and Shanghai.

    Since starting at BISS in 2015, Dan has taught and held a middle leadership role as Year 4 leader. Whilst doing this, he worked closely with the senior leadership team on a number of projects, using both his pedagogical expertise and his knowledge of BISS and the international school community. He is now excited about the opportunity to work with a wider range of students in the role of Assistant Head.

    Christopher Erasmus

    Chris graduated from the University of South Wales in 2014 with BA Honours in Primary Education and shortly afterwards began his career at a large multi-cultural school in Newport, Wales. He worked here for 4 years as a class teacher and held responsibilities as Leader of Digital Learning & Physical Education Coordinator, before being seconded to the Education Achievement Service as a Mathematics Teacher Adviser. During this role, Chris works in close partnership with all schools in the South East Wales consortium to raise standards in Mathematics & Numeracy across a range of age groups. Earlier this year, Chris completed his Masters in Educational Practice degree at Cardiff University which has provided him with a wealth of experience around teaching and learning.

    Chris highly values the importance of extra-curricular activities, enabling learners to gain a breadth of experiences which can unlock individual talents. He is a motivational teacher whose personal mantra “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you” is often infectious, helping both learners and staff to thrive and maximise their full potential. He cannot wait to be a part of the BISS Puxi team in Shanghai.

    Paul Kelly

    Paul completed a BEd in PE and Science in 1997 and went straight into teaching, working in a number of schools in the South East of England. In 2002 he took up the role of Head of PE at St Christopher School in Hertfordshire where he stayed for 10 years holding down a number of additional roles such as House Master, trip coordinator and Head of the Teaching and Learning Committee.

    Lisa Cavanagh

    Lisa studied German with International Studies at Warwick University from 1991-1995. She then took a year out and completed her CTEFLA certificate for EAL and taught children in EAL schools in Oxfordshire. She then found herself working in retail management for 2 years, but felt that her heart lay in teaching and so returned to Warwick to complete her PGCE.

    Nicholas Rickford

    Nick studied History at the University of Edinburgh, but spent much of his free time conducting walking tours of the ancient city during the day and scaring unsuspecting tourists whilst working as a ghost tour guide under the cover of darkness. After graduation he spent several years working in the corporate events industry, designing and running conferences for senior public servants and leaders of global communications companies.

  • Fiona McConnon

    Assistant Head of Secondary & Head of Global Languages

    Fiona McConnon

    Fiona McConnon graduated from University College London (UCL) with an honours degree in French and from York University with a PGCE in French and sport. She subsequently taught English at a University in Lanzhou with Voluntary Service Overseas for two years, where she became fascinated by Mandarin. This led to her spending five years mainly in Beijing as a British Council – Chinese government scholar at the Beijing Languages Institute, completing a Masters in the Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language.

    As Head of Languages at an International School in Beijing, she used western language learning methodologies in her Mandarin teaching to foster enjoyment and confidence in her students.  She more recently headed up the MFL and Classics Faculty in an outstanding school in north London, Northwood College, which excelled in developing deeper thinking in students.

    She has held a number of management roles at the British Embassy and in UK-based charities involved in work related to China and has completed an MSc in Development Management with the Open University.
