Emma Díaz Fernández

Teacher of Spanish

Emma Diaz Fernandez

BA in English Studies, BA in Hispanic Studies, PGCE

Born in the North West of Spain, Emma has always loved languages and started her career learning English as a foreign language, and Spanish language and literature. As a student of Hispanic Studies, a gap year from the University of Salamanca took her to Birmingham in the UK, where she was fortunate enough to combine her passion for her mother tongue with a proper immersion in the English language and literature; experiencing the culture first hand. After finishing her degree, Emma completed her PGCE in Modern Languages in Gloucestershire and started her teaching career at Cheltenham Ladies’College , where she worked as a teacher of Spanish and Head of the Spanish Department. Emma is an IB examiner for Language B and has enjoyed taking part in publishing textbooks for students learning Spanish at all levels, both as an author and as an academic editor. In 2018, Emma decided to start a new adventure and moved  to Singapore where she worked for three years until her move to BISS.Born in the North West of Spain, Emma has always loved languages and started her career learning English as a foreign language, and Spanish language and literature. In 2018, Emma decided to start a new adventure and moved  to Singapore where she worked for three years until her move to BISS.

Emma’s time working in Singapore provided her with the opportunity to fully experience and promote multiculturalism. She enjoyed learning from the students whilst providing them with well- planned, challenging and engaging lessons. Emma prioritises the quality of teaching and learning and believes that every student has a unique way of learning. She enjoys the flexibility of the IB Diploma as it allows her to adapt the course to the interests of the students with the aim of developing their experience of the language and motivating them when they see the relevance of what they are learning in their own lives. Fostering curiosity is key and Emma thoroughly enjoys being creative and using photography, art, music and cinema in her lessons to create links with other subjects and the culture of the target language. She challenges students’ knowledge and points of view, allowing them to take ownership of their own learning. Emma believes in delivering lessons that empower students by challenging them and providing them with the tools to believe that they can be independent and successful in the subject and beyond the classroom; she hopes to continue to evolve as a professional to achieve this goal and make a difference in their lives.

Emma is passionate about travelling and has made the most of every possible opportunity to see the world. She loves Latin America and has really enjoyed visiting countries such as Cuba, Colombia, Argentina, Peru and many more; backpacking and getting to know the countries and their people in her travels. Emma has always loved reading, cinema and photography, and thoroughly enjoys sharing these interests with her students. As a Spaniard, socialising over food is part of her culture and therefore, cooking food for others is one of Emma’s main hobbies.
