Over the last week, I had the pleasure of attending the annual Nord Anglia Conference for Senior Leaders in Switzerland. I must thank the staff at College Alpin International Beau Soleil, one of our Nord Anglia Schools, for hosting the event which provided a wonderful chance for Principals of our 56 schools to collaborate. The themes of this year’s conference centred around our NAE collaboration with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and the way students learn through challenging projects combining the curriculum areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM). Thought-provoking presentations delivered by Justin Reichs, from MIT, and Mark Benno from Apple reinforced the fact that we have made an excellent start for embracing these initiatives here at BIS.
Another highlight of this year’s conference was the presentation from Lord David Puttnam, the Nord Anglia Education advisory board Chair. Lord Puttnam reflected on the fast pace of change in technologies and questioned whether schools are adapting their curriculum to cater for the skills needed in today’s world. The importance of creativity was emphasised as the number of jobs in creative industries are rising at double the rate of jobs in other sectors.
On the theme of creativity, I must mention our group of 15 BIS students who are currently in Cambodia at Northbridge International School for a Nord Anglia STEAM festival. Puzzle hunts and MIT challenges saw the students using their problem solving skills to apply some animal superpowers to real-world issues! I look forward to hearing more as the weekend unfolds!
With the sad death of former General Secretary Do Muoi, the British Embassy decided to postpone the Inspire Me festival, which was scheduled to take place this weekend at Hoan Kiem Lake. I know that many of our students were working very hard to perfect their performances in readiness for the BIS programme on the main stage. I would like to confirm that the Inspire Me Festival will now take place during the weekend of 9th – 11th November. Further details will follow shortly to give a precise time for our BIS talented choir, musicians, theatrical performers and Maypole dancers.
