We are delighted to announce that our student, Hyungun (Year 11), successfully took 1st place in the Junior category for his excellent cello performance at the Chianmai Ginastera International Music Festival 2019.

The 4th annual Chiang Mai Ginastera International Music Festival (CGIMF), took place from November 17-23 at Chiang Mai, Thailand. The competition drew more than 100 entrants from all over world where contestants performed their recitals on their chosen instrument with performances including piano, violin, cello, wind instruments and vocals. The judges for the festival were specially chosen for their international reputations and devotion to music education and came from many different countries.

This is the first time that Hyungun (Year 11), participated in the competition. He put all of his effort into the competition and successfully brought home his gold medal - the first place prize for Junior category (Junior C) for performers aged 13-15 years old.

Hyungun impressed the audiences with his stellar performance and received amazing feedbacks from the judges. The judges shared with him that criteria was for musicians not only their technical ability, but also for their ability to draw in and control the crowd. Following all performances, they saw his huge potential to be a professional musician and awarded him the first prize in the Junior C category.

At BIS, Hyungun is a familiar face on the stage at many of our events. Before this competition, he had already performed this year at our IGCSE Award Ceremony. An event that took place at the British Ambassador’s Residence with attendance from teachers, parents and other special guests including Gareth Ward, the British Ambassador himself. He also performed a solo Beethoven piece at the International Festival 2019 in early November where he played to close to 1000 people.

“I appreciate all the support from teachers and friends to Huyngun and I am sure Hyungun will continue to do his best after being inspired by this great experience”, Ms. Kim – Hyungun’s mother.

Chianmai Ginastera International Music Festival (CGIMF) started in 2016  to mark the 100th birthday anniversary of Alberto Ginastera, an Argentinean composer, who inspired a lot of young musicians saying that " Your music must reach beyond the country of you origin. Do not confine yourself to boundaries". Inspired by these words, CGIMF is determined to spread the unique artistic culture of the Asian provincial city of Chiang Mai to the world and is planned to invite internationally acclaimed musicians to hold world-class performances, with the aim to bring Chiang Mai to the world stage.
