An interview with Salome Airdrie, Head of PE (Whole School)

What does the PE department teach?

The department teaches Physical Education throughout the school. In Primary and Secondary students have PE twice a week. In Secondary, students can select CIE IGCSE PE for Year 10 and 11 and IB Sport, Exercise and Health Science for Year 12 and 13, as one of their examination subjects.

Do the Primary students learn the same skills as Secondary students?

We are focusing on refining fundamental skills throughout the Primary school and in Secondary we build on the skills and implement them in various physical activities.

Students explore different activities in striking and fielding; net/wall games; target games; gymnastics; swimming, fitness and invasion games. Students in Year 10 and 11 explore various roles in the sporting community by learning the role of the coach as well as the official. These skills are useful when students are in the Sixth form to assist in their CAS activities.

Do PE teachers use technology in their lessons?

The department are implementing various technologies in the classroom. The department possesses great ingenuity and engages with all the learners during the lessons and with homework reflections.

How do you maintain BIS Hanoi’s high profile in sports?

The department has set up house events for Key Stage 3 during ECA time to get more students active. This is helping to assist students to develop their skill and understanding. This also provides the opportunity for the Sports Leaders in Year 12 and 13 to coach Primary students and assist in the Key Stage 3 tournaments as officials. The department is also giving the more competitive students the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of volleyball, basketball, football and swimming to be able to be compete in local and international tournaments as soon as preventative measures are lifted.

The department is hosting the NAE Global Campus Swimming meet on the 17th of November.

Are you excited about the future of sport at BIS?

The department is very excited in seeing the subject being more accessible for more students in the future.
