It is hard to believe that after over the last four and a half years I have written over 100 articles and now it is time to create my final one for BVIS Hanoi. Words cannot fully express how I feel and how honoured I have been to serve your children and your families during this time. One thing is absolutely certain though; I am leaving this school in an incredibly strong position and in very capable hands. Mrs. West, acting Head of Primary, and Mr. Rao, our newly appointed Assistant Head, will continue with the school development plan ensuring the direction of the school remains unchanged. They will also work with our Parent Ambassadors and ensure effective communication amongst the community is continued, looking for ways of improving the school still further.
How best to describe my time at BVIS? The best years of my professional life.
I have seen it very much as a two-way development, a collaboration of improvement. The school has grown in size, status and effectiveness. Staff have been inspired and valued to maximise the learning opportunities for your children, and I have developed as a leader. Leadership is a much discussed and written about subject but for me it is a simple concept. If you value and respect your staff, give them opportunities and allow them to succeed, whilst of course holding them accountable, then they are intrinsically motivated to do the very best they can. The beneficiaries of this, your children.
You can only value and respect people if you get to know them, if you understand their point of view, or at least acknowledge that they have a different point of view. Working and living in Hanoi has taught me this, given me cultural understanding but probably more than this, just understanding of people. I will take this to my new job, meet people with an open mind, treat everyone fairly and hope the successes we have enjoyed together will be enjoyed again, just in a new school and different country.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you and farewell. I hope we meet again.
