Poppy Appeal 2019

Poppy 1

In November, both primary and secondary student councils have led the campaign to help raising money for the Poppy Appeal 2019. The event was inspired by the Royal British Legion during the anniversary of Remembrance Day in order to support UK veterans and their families.  Showing so much of their engagement, teamwork and collaboration, students worked together for 30 minutes in-classroom to sell poppies during break time every day during the week of Remembrance. As a whole school, we have raised VND 9,287,500 for the Poppy Appeal this year! Thanks to our brilliant Year 2 - Year 6 students in primary, secondary students and teachers for organising and selling so well, and of course to our community for their generous donations.

As for the result, the Group Captain Bea Walcot of the UK Defence Attaché in Vietnam (British Embassy) with her assistant visited our Assembly on 15th November and congratulated our students’ great work:

“A huge vote of thanks to students and staff of the British Vietnamese International School, Hanoi, for once again arranging for poppies to be sold in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. I am delighted to tell you that the School raised the tremendous total of VND 9,287,500. That is incredibly generous, especially as every ‘đồng’ raised is going to help UK veterans and their families who have suffered as a consequence of military service.

It is clear from the thought-provoking assembly last week to which Staff Sergeant Adrian Jones and I were invited that your students have a highly-developed understanding of the values of teamwork, duty and perseverance which are also very much part of military values and ethos. I should also add that Remembrance is increasingly about recalling the sacrifice of those civilians who have died through conflict, across the globe, but especially of course in Vietnam

To that end, I am keen to adjust our strategy and open up next year’s season of ‘Remembrance’ to be more inclusive of local fundraising and cultural norms, and to support the curriculum. I will be in touch in due course to discuss how best this might work.

In the meantime, may I once again wholeheartedly congratulate the British Vietnamese International School for your outstanding support to the 2019 Poppy Appeal”
