On 12th January, the British Vietnamese International School Hanoi celebrated Lunar New Year, one of Vietnam’s most important festivals in the cultural calendar. This year, our annual Tet fair conveyed the message of protecting the environment through the theme: 1.5°. This is the average temperature increase for the Earth predicted to occur between 2030 and 2052 due to global warming. This increases poses a potential threat to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security, and economic growth.
At the opening ceremony, Mark Sayer, Principal of BVIS , emphasized the importance of the Tet fair: "This is a festival that all students, parents and teachers always look forward to every year. 1.5° Tet is a place where BVIS community enjoys the Tet atmosphere together but also helps us to realise the importance of environmental protection.”
At the Tet fair, students participated in traditional activities such as making Chung cake, playing footbridge, pot cracking and bamboo dance. This is also a consistent approach of the school to ensure students not only acquire knowledge from international education but still nurture and promote the traditional language and culture of Vietnam. Also, BVIS Hanoi students engaged in practical activities to protect the environment, such as recycling paper and batteries used for green plants, or not using plastic bags and plastic straws in the event.
Last, but not least, we applaud students of all grades who practiced for weeks to share their amazing performances on the central stage; and to students, teachers and staff had worked very hard to bring a little of the festive spring atmosphere to all who attended.
