Principal Update BVIS HCMC

Mr Simon Higham - Principal

Mr. Simon Higham, Principal

Dear Parents

Our most recent Parent Satisfaction Survey that was concluded in January this year highlighted the ongoing strengths of our school:

  • 99% of families think that their child receives a quality education from the school.
  • 98% of families think that the school provides a stimulating learning environment.
  • 98% of families think that their child feels safe at school
  • 98% of families think that their child is happy at school

Of course, there were some areas from the survey, whilst strong against regional and worldwide averages, that we will continue to prioritise within our school development planning, both this year and beyond. These included:

  • Developing more opportunities to improve global awareness across our school.
  • Raising a wider awareness of, and developing further provision for, the NAE MIT STEAM programme across our school.
  • Further improving our IT teaching facilities and over technology provision across the school.

Announcing our new Global Campus

In direct response to this feedback, I am very pleased to announce the new Global Campus Platform that can be accessed by all BVIS students. The aim of Global Campus is to help connect our school with other Nord Anglia schools and students across the globe as ‘we learn better, together’.

Meet our new teachers

This week, it is my pleasure to introduce Ms Anna Forrest who has been with our school since January 2020, covering a maternity leave and has now recently taken up her role as Primary teacher:

BVIS HCMC Staff Ms Anna Forrest

1. Where did you live prior to coming to Vietnam, what role did you have and what was the name of your previous school?

Before coming to BVIS in January, I taught at Sighthill Primary in Edinburgh, Scotland. Prior to training as a Primary teacher, I gained my Cert-TESOL qualification and taught English in a variety of settings in England, Austria and Thailand.

2. What were your first impressions of BVIS?

My first impressions of our school were formed during my interview, when Ms. Rosy spoke passionately about the unique bilingual environment. When I arrived, I was impressed by the incredible facilities here, and even more so by how enthusiastic the children were about their learning.

3. What is your teaching philosophy in short?

I believe that a school should be a nurturing place, where all children are able to develop socially, emotionally and academically. I hope that all the children in my care will develop a love for learning, as well as independent thinking skills.

4. What 3 things are you looking forward to doing whilst working and living in Vietnam?

So far, I’ve been able to visit many beautiful places in Vietnam and am looking forward to exploring even more of the country during our holidays. I would also love to go scuba diving. I loved seeing the Tet celebrations when I first arrived, so I’m really looking forward to the Moon Festival.

5. If you could sum up your experience so far in just one word, what would it be?

Eventful!

Please note that you can access all of our staff profiles on the school website within the ‘Our Teachers’ tab. This can be found here.

Moon Festival

What a delight it was to see our Y3 and Y5 students performing on the stage on Friday to celebrate this year’s Full Moon Festival.  Dressed in Ao Dai as we arrived at school, everyone was ready for the day of celebrations ahead and to receive their lantern as a gift from school.

This time of year is so special for our children as they hear the story of Cuội being retold and celebrate the moon at its biggest and brightest.  On Thursday 1st October be sure to look up to the moon and hold up your bright lanterns to guide Cuội back down to earth.  Thank you to all the students, teachers and staff who were involved in putting together the spectacular performance and dragon dance; our mid-Autumn festival is now certainly brighter.

Early Years is where learning starts!

This week we had our third successful week in Fundinotots with Ms Chrissy and Ms Yen.  A baby’s experiences begin to shape their understanding of the world, their emotions, their confidence and their social skills. Enriching these opportunities is something that we as educationalists promote and we are always available to you in order to guide our BVIS parents in how this can be achieved.

BVIS HCMC Fundinotots programmes

From next week, we are offering children and their families free trials in our Fundinotots sessions to find out just how beneficial play can be to a child’s learning.

If you would like a free trial, please complete the form at this link.  If you have any questions please contact Ms. Phung Huynh – Admissions Officer at phung.huynh@bvisvietnam.com or contact us on: 028 3758 8033.

The article here shares more about the importance of play for our little ones.

Phonics fun for all

Thank you once again to all those families who joined us for our second Phonics Coffee Morning.  This time Year 1 and Year 2 parents were invited, together with new parents in Year 3, to learn about Sets 2-3 English sounds and Sets 2-6 Vietnamese sounds. We were joined by some of our Year 3 students, who confidently helped parents learn the phonic sounds and demonstrated how to blend these to read words. Next week on Thursday 1st October, we are trialing a ‘webinar’ approach for the third phonics workshop where the focus will be on reading and all parents from Years 1 to 3 are invited to join.  Look out on ClassDojo for the link to join.

Young Musician of the Year 2020

Last Friday Years 1 to 6 were privileged to hear 10 spectacular musicians demonstrate their talent in the semi-finals of our Young Musician of the Year 2020 competition.  The interval during the performance was filled with the whole of primary singing an impressive and notable song in recognition of the United Nations, International Day of Peace, which was on Monday 21st September.

Thank you to the students for learning the meaningful lyrics, to the Y10 band who played the music and to Mr Fergus, Ms Yen and Ms Georgina for facilitating it all.

The final of the outstanding interschool Young Musician of the Year 2020 will be hosted in our Main Hall at BVIS on Tuesday 6th October at 6pm.  Our BVIS finalists will be joined by finalists from the British International School (BIS), our sister Nord Anglia school, located in District Two.  It will be an evening to remember for not only the competitors but their families, who are invited to join the audience, and their teachers.  Well done to all those who auditioned for the competition and a special well done to all those who reached the final. They are Ae Sun 6B, Ngan Giang 6I, LyLy 5I, Ngoc 5S.  I wish our finalists all the very best for their final piece that they will play at the Young Musician of the Year 2020 final.

What are weekends for?

Our weekend sports programme began last Saturday with many sports on offer including swimming, football and tennis.  Students from across the primary years joined together to enjoy their hobbies and at the same time keep fit and active.  It is great to see so many participating in such a wide variety of sports.  Sign up is extended so, if you would still like to join the activities, please see Mr Tam Nguyen (PE TA) or email at tam.nguyen@bvisvietnam.com

Please follow this link to find out more about what is on offer.

Year 9 Geography

Year 9 Geography students are working on creating posters that represent the world as a village of 100 people. They have debated how many people would live in each continent and why this would be the case, leading onto discussions about the status and health of countries. The posters that are being created look fantastic and are very informative too.

Year 12 Economics

In Year 12 Economics lessons this week, students debated about whether a command or free market economy was best for a country and its people.  The students expressed their views confidently having spent time researching the topic to collect the evidence needed to make their arguments. Well done on some fantastic points and confident speaking.
