Country Day School - Katherine Evans

Math & Computational thinking

My love of math started at a young age, perusing GAMES magazines and doing brain teasers with my Dad.  In 7th grade I decided to become a math teacher, having been inspired by the logic and organization of the subject.  After graduating from Brigham Young University with a degree in Mathematics Education, I began teaching in public schools in Arizona, then Minnesota.  I expanded my skills by heading up an AP C++ programming class, sitting on the founding board of a mathematics competition, co-chairing a school math team and writing a summer school curriculum.  After taking some time off to raise a family, I worked as a private tutor while living in Pennsylvania and São Paulo, Brazil before returning to the classroom as a substitute teacher in Virginia.  Our family has been in Costa Rica for two years enjoying the beautiful country and associations with Country Day School.

This year I am excited to help set the skill base of the 7th grade students to prepare them for success in Algebra and beyond.  The goal for students is not to love fractions or dream of positive and negative numbers dancing the can-can, but to know what skills they already have that can help them succeed in real world situations.  The goal is to be able to organize the provided information, evaluate their available resources and complete a task with confidence.

When I'm not doing math workbooks and games for fun I am hiking, sewing, baking, building, traveling, watching movies, reading, sleeping and hanging out with friends and family.  I especially like teaching and learning.  It is a joy to see confidence grow while developing a new skill and having a finished product.  The excitement of finally understanding what was once thought of as impossible or too hard is one of my favorite things to experience or observe.
