Making is an important part of what we do at NISC. We have students that are knowledgeable, students who are creative and students who are great problem-solvers. But making is a way to combine all of these traits and more into one activity. Also, it's really fun!

We recently had a Hackathon at school, which is an all day event where students are given a challenge or a problem, and presented the task of designing a novel solution. Our challenge was to design a garden bed that could be built in our school, and also something that we could share out to families in Cambodia, allowing them to grow their own produce and help prevent hunger and malnutrition.
 
We had some ingenious and innovative solutions, and observed excellent collaboration and problem-solving. Students also got to hear specialist talks on visible thinking, iterative design and how to draw accurate technical drawings.
 
Gyubin said "it was a totally awesome experience and I had a lot of fun making new friends. The hackathon taught me how to think in different ways"

Bovee said "I was nervous about entering the hackathon but our team did great. It was very interesting to learn about Design".
 
The hackathon was modelled partly on similar events undertaken by students at MIT. The concept of hacking and making is an integral part of Nord Anglia's collaboration with MIT to improve STEAM learning in our schools.
