Biography
Alf is a passionate educator who works hard to empower his students to become lifelong learners, recognising and utilising the learning opportunities all around them. He values inquiry and collaboration as ways to develop these skills and negotiate their understanding. Alf employs high expectations, strong relationships and personalised learning goals to get the best from every student in his class, giving them ownership of their own, personal learning journey. Alf is a strong believer in the power of the effective use of learning technologies and has led the ICT and Computing curriculum in three of the schools he has taught in. In his last two schools in Bangkok, Alf led the Primary school productions and recognises the importance of drama to help students see the world through different eyes, to develop empathy and to challenge themselves.
After graduating from the University of the West of England in 1997, Alf spent four years teaching in Bristol before moving to Thailand to join St Andrews in Bangkok as teacher and Key Stage 2 coordinator for four years. This was followed by three years teaching in Scotland and then returning to St Andrews for another seven years. He then took a year to set up an education program for eleven schools in the slums of Bangkok for a charity called the Mercy Centre. Before coming to NAS Jakarta Alf taught at Charter International School for four years where he also served on the Academic Management Team.
Outside of school, Alf is an avid runner, singer and drama enthusiast. He serves on the board of directors for the Mercy Centre and visits the children he sponsors there often. He is new to Jakarta and is looking forward to finding outlets for his many interests.
