Melissa believes teaching is a two-way process, in which she is inspired by and learns from the children she works with. Melissa uses creative, innovative and energetic techniques to bring the teaching environment to life. To do this she incorporates hands-on and cooperative learning, cross–curricular topics and personalised goals to engage and activate students in teamwork and independence. Reflection is central to Melissa’s philosophy; it is how she ensures that her teaching develops to meet the students’ needs and ensure successful outcomes. As a confident teacher and ambassador in all the schools, educational and cultural environments she has worked in, Melissa always uses excellent communication skills to bring all subject areas to life, inspiring and collaborating with others.
Melissa drives to deliver excellence across all curriculum subjects and has an infectious passion for maths. Melissa loves to inspire learning and see children of all abilities reach their full potential. Melissa provides a stimulating classroom environment where everyone is actively challenged and involved in learning, and where achievement, effort and good behaviour are rewarded. Melissa’s cheerful, positive, enthusiastic personality is reflected in her teaching style. Melissa’s international experiences have broadened her cultural horizons, independent spirit and teaching style as she adapts to, learns from and transforms children’s lives.
Melissa loves travel, meeting new people and embracing new cultures. She has spent the last three years working as a home tutor, camp leader and nanny while travelling through Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. In 2013, Melissa volunteered at a school in one of the most remote areas of South Africa while living with a local family and in 2016, Melissa spent her summer volunteering with the Masaai tribe in rural Kenya. When she is not working with children, Melissa is most likely to be found in the ocean. Melissa loves swimming and diving and learning about the natural world while being surrounded by it.
“I am lucky. Through teaching I get to live my passion. I love inspiring learning. I love working with children. I love helping them reach their full potential. Being part of a school like NAS Jakarta is the reason I came into teaching. With my experience in 12 diverse primary schools, rural schools in Africa and the South Pacific and multiple other settings I believe I am delighted to become an integral member of the team at NAS Jakarta.”
