As teachers and parents, it is a joint responsibility to educate and equip children with the knowledge, skills and awareness to keep themselves safe when using the Internet and Social Media Apps.
Children in the upper primary school are taught to report things that upset them to adults, how to deal with cyberbullying and the importance of being kind online when interacting with others.
This complex area of education is difficult to monitor and observe as many children have access to devices when they interact online without direct adult supervision. To ensure child safety and well-being online a three-point approach is best.
- Make sure all security settings on devices children use are set to an appropriate age level. You can use search engines for advice on how to do this.
- Be aware of what your child is viewing and what apps they are using.
- Keep discussing with your child about their online interaction to stay involved and ‘in the know’.
The internet is a powerful tool that has changed the world for the better. Working in partnership as teachers and parents as educators we can guide young people through the pitfalls of the web and promote positive and safe use of technology.
