We have the Kindergarten to Grade 1 Musical on 14 February (see poster above), Book Week, the Primary CATS production and ISA testing for all Grade 3 to 10 students. Although there is much on, the Primary teachers will be very busy focusing on their professional development and continuing to update and strengthen the programme of inquiry and the literacy and maths programmes.

What questions will teachers be focused on this semester?

During our Monday Morning Builders, teachers will be learning more about developing a Professional Learning Community (PLC )and will be discussing these four essential questions as they plan their units in maths, literacy and Units of Inquiry (UOI):

  • What do we want our students to learn?
  • How will we know if they have learned it?
  • What will we do if some students don't learn?
  • How will we extend the learning for those who are ready?

These four questions are at the heart of the PLC model and support discussions amongst staff around how we can ensure that all students learn and grow.

Here is a link for more information about the PLC model.

What do we want our students to learn?

During this semester, teachers will be focusing on reviewing our curriculum which will not only deepen their understanding of the scope and sequence of our curriculum, but also support them in finding ways in which they can intentionally embed and support the development of different approaches to learning (ATLs).

These ATLS are skills that our students need in order to become lifelong learners who engage with the world with a mindset that allows them to identify problems or challenges and work towards solutions.

Below are some examples of the different types of approaches to learning in a PYP school. As you look over them, I encourage you to consider how you can develop these at home:

As we move through this semester, I am excited to see how our children will strengthen their skills for learning, increase their knowledge and understanding, and exercise their agency to lead their learning. I am excited to see how they will embody our vision and develop caring hearts and ambitious minds.
