Grade 7 Northbridge International School Cambodia students became interplanetary travel agents last week in their science class. One of the activities in the unit 'Earth Science' led by Ms Silvia and Mr Tom asked students to do research on extraterrestrial environments in the solar system and create a brochure to promote them as destinations for future space travelers.
Orientation in Space and Time is one of the Global Contexts that the MYP programme proposes to be at the core of inquiry units as a way to create a meaningful connection between the content and the real world.
This activity allowed students to appreciate our place in the solar system and the different environments within it.
Commercial space flights are looking less like science fiction today and Grade 7 students took a first look at what the solar system has to offer.
Through this unit, students also worked on their communication and collaboration skills.
Each team of agents had to collaborate to sell the destination and they took turns to be either a customer interested in a interplanetary trip or the travel agent promoting their own destination.
Communication skills were essential at the moment of selling their space trip packages to potential customers.
With the flexibility that the MYP bring into the classroom, teachers have the possibility to explore activities that can reach diverse populations and it was amazing to see how some students that in other contexts might be shy, really went out and sold their destination like real entrepreneurs competing for the market.
Look out for some of our 7th graders and find out what planet you want to visit next!
