Held every year on 21 February, International Mother Language Day is observed worldwide, including here at Northbridge International School Cambodia, to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The theme for this year is “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society” which recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion.
According to the message of the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, it is vital to support multilingualism and the use of mother tongues, both at school and in everyday life as “40% of the world’s inhabitants do not have access to education in the language they speak which hinders their learning, as well as their access to heritage and cultural expressions.”
History of International Mother Language Day
On 21 February 1952, four students were killed in Bangladesh while campaigning for the acceptance of the Bangli language as one of the official languages. To commemorate the sacrifice of the students, UNESCO proclaimed this day as International Mother Language day.
International Mother Language Day Celebration at NISC
To be in line with global efforts to preserve the differences in languages and cultures, NISC celebrated International Mother Language Day on Thursday 18th February.
The school community members dressed up in their country’s color, flag or traditional outfit to represent their mother language. Mother language learning students carried out research on their languages and proudly shared their knowledge with their peers.
Students also enjoyed teachers’ videos recorded in different languages to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity in our school and around the world.
