What a fun first few weeks we have had here in JKC. We have been busy learning about the topic “This is Me”. Children have been exploring concepts based around themselves and their family, their home, friendships, caring for others, emotions, rules and routines along with looking at how we are all similar and different. In JKC we used photos of the children’s families as provocations, as well as families from around the world, their houses and living environments. The children have been particularly interested in learning about and constructing houses, making their family members, then using these to re tell stories and share special activities their family likes to do together. Extending on from this interest, we also created a challenge for the children, where they had to work in groups to create a house that the Big Bad Wolf could not blow down. These sorts of ‘team challenge’ activities will continue to feature throughout the year to support our units, developing communication and co-operation skills along with a collaborative class culture.

We have been learning through active play, dancing and singing. Learning the names of body parts and discovering amazing things our bodies can do.

We were particularly interested in inquiring into jungle houses and how they differ from our own, so decided to try to create one. We have started by collecting leaves and twigs.

Letter learning fun. We made Spiral Snakes, then had a Slippery Snake Skipping race outside in the Sun.
Through being involved in these activities children are given the opportunity to communicate their thoughts and ideas, use critical thinking skills, design and create their ideas representing these in interesting and creative ways. They are able to experience learning that is meaningful and relatable to their own lives as well as exploring other people and cultures around the world. In JKC we are working to provide children with opportunities to view themselves as competent, capable, unique individuals and learners, while also knowing they are part of a larger learning community.
