Reception Learn About Healthy Eating From The Little Red Hen

23 oktober 2014

Earlier this week, The Little Red Hen set the Reception cubs a challenge! Reception Teacher, Sarah Rawson, tells us how they got on…

Little Red Hen had eaten too much bread and needed to start making some healthy choices so she asked the Reception cubs to work as a team to find her some delicious fruits to eat.

All week the children have been busy writing her shopping lists and buying her fruit from the farmer's market and then on Thursday morning, the Reception cubs came together to share all of the fruit equally between the four classes. Little Red Hen was really proud of their team work.

The Reception cubs then followed Little Red Hen's instructions to wash, cut and peel the different fruits to make their own fruit skewers. They also understood that washing their hands and using the equipment safely was very important.

All of the cubs tried to eat at least one piece of fruit. Some of them enjoyed trying all four types of fruit.

We used this activity to get the children thinking about a variety things: the importance of eating healthily, using new vocabulary to describe the different fruit they were trying, experimenting with eating things for the first time and learning about how to prepare food safely.

Some of the amazing vocabulary the children used to described the taste and texture of the fruits included: sweet, sour, juicy, soft, squashy and fresh.

Overall Little Red Hen was incredibly impressed with the Reception cub’s preparation skills and their ability to take risks when trying new things!
