Sinterklaas Visits the Shanghai Dutch School

03 december 2014

This year Sinterklaas came to Shanghai again, by boat, all the way from Spain and the Shanghai Dutch School celebrated his arrival in their usual fun-loving style! Head of the Shanghai Dutch School, Mayke Van Krevel, tells us all about it.

  • Students at BISS Puxi celebrate Sinterklaas

All the children were very excited when they received a letter from Sinterklaas which stated that he would come to BISS Puxi for a visit. He had one problem though, he did not bring enough helpers, so he asked the students to help him with filling the shoes at night, baking pepernoten, wrapping presents and performing and writing poems.

The students from Year 8 wrote a puppet script and performed for the primary students. The students from Years 9 and 10 were accepted into the Sinterklaas Helper School and they all passed their exams with flying colours. These students were then officially added to the Sinterklaas Staff.

At 5 o' clock last Friday night two Sinterklazen arrived at the gate, but they were fake ones! The students took over and revealed the actual identities of the fake Sinterklazen: Mr Kris and Mr Job.

Finally, with stressful texting to Sinterklaas, we found him in the new library of the Shanghai Dutch School, enjoying himself by reading all the new books.

The students brought him to Stage One, where the children could shake hands with him. All the kids had been good, according to the Big Sint Book, and so received yummy candies.

We danced and sang for Sinterklaas. He was very happy to see all of the kids and he loved the school and best of all he promised to come back next year.
