Year 1 students enjoying their Ugly Bug Ball and their trip to the Shanghai Natural Insect Kingdom

Over the past weeks Year 1 have been using their research skills to find out facts about butterflies, ants and bees and created their own non-fiction books. They have also planted seeds, kept plant diaries and looked after ant farms and silk worms. The children learned about life cycles and used a variety of art skills to bring the classroom to life with some amazing classroom displays.

The topic culminated in a series of exciting experiences last week with a trip to the Shanghai Natural Insect Kingdom and an Ugly Bug Ball. The children were able to make connections with what they had learned in class and the outside world. They were able to see real insects, identifying their names and distinct body parts. The children also saw a variety of different exhibits, including lizards, snakes, spiders and monkeys!

They then practised their Maths skills when they bought a small item from the museum shop. They had to budget their money, make good choices and work out if they had been given the correct amount of change.

After all of this excitement the children then had an Ugly Bug Ball. They brought in fruit and vegetables for their healthy snack in the afternoon and we discussed which parts of the plant their food came from. The children learned songs about insects, made bug themed hats for the party and had their faces painted.

Thank you to all of our parent helpers who helped to make both days a huge success!
