Year 4 Learn About Sustainability

11 juni 2014

Year 4 have been learning about why it is so important to look after our planet and how they can use its resources wisely. To learn more about how people are making a big difference by making little changes, they visited Anken Green Skyfarm in Jing An. Year 4 Leader Michelle Hills told us about their trip.

  • Year 4 at BISS Puxi learn about Sustainability at the Anken Green Skyfarm in Jing An

We were greeted outside the restored building by Susan Evans who told us about the materials used in the building and its effect on the environment.  We learnt that carefully restored buildings save on materials and can use less energy.

When we reached the skyfarm on the top of the building, we learnt how to make compost.  After much digging, being surprised by worms and bravely relocating centipedes, we had managed to work as a team to make nutritious compost which we then scooped into our hemp bags, ready for planting seeds.

After close observations of Red Wiggler Worms (the best to use when making compost apparently) we planted some sage seeds.

In contrast, we also visited the Urban Planning Exhibition to see photos from the past and present which showed how quickly Shanghai has developed and changed.  The large 3D model of Shanghai amazed us!

It was a great day!
