More than classroom lessons

19 november 2015

I was very proud to attend our IGCSE Ceremony last night where the achievements of the students were recognised and their certificates officially presented. This evening was a happy occasion where the students (with their parents and teachers) could take a moment to reflect on their learning journey to date and celebrate individual and collective achievements.

  • BISS Lions 2015

Student speeches, musical presentations and slide shows showcased not just the talents of these students but also the collegiality and strong friendships that these young people have forged during their time at BISS Puxi. Working, learning, playing and growing together. A strong message that came across was that achievement is best achieved with the support and friendship of others, be they peers, parents or teachers.

But this collegiality and peer support does not simply happen. It evolves out of a school environment and ethos that actively encourages all members of the community to work together in a positive and supportive way. Our teachers push each and every student to academically achieve their best but also teach young people how to help and support each other, and to take joy in both their own and others’ achievements. Our curriculum offers such a breadth of exciting experiences that each child has the chance to explore interests and to find others who share their passions.

Over the last few weeks, our blog and school calendar exemplify the wide range of opportunities open to our students on a regular basis. They have the chance to grow, learn, explore, compete, be creative and ambitious…all in a nurturing environment and shared with friends. Our young sports people have been competing locally and internationally with great success and camaraderie, with our U15 teams excelling in the Fobisia Games in Hong Kong. Our Year 9 and 10 explorers have made the exciting journey to Tanzania and are already busy on their service project, while our Silver International Award students braved the elements on their recent hiking and camping adventure. Our aspiring lawyers and politicians took part in the latest Shanghai Model United Nations where they demonstrated great debating skills and public speaking. Closer to home, our designers have been building festive models and baubles, our talented performers having their final rehearsals for their “Fools Gold” production, our musicians preparing for the Winter Concert and our CAS students getting organised for the Christmas Fair and coordinating the 600+ Giving Tree bags that have been donated.

We are such a busy school with so much learning taking place every day, not just in the classrooms but in so many exciting and engaging ways. Busy, focused, engaged so that every child can think more, achieve more and be more. With so much going on, please do keep up to date by checking the school website and calendar and ensure that you don’t miss out on any of the great events coming up over the coming weeks. Thanks for your continued support.
