They played different versions of the Circle Dance theme on keyboards and chose suitable sounds to create their choice of mood / timbre.
Year 4 have started to learn to play the cello and have enjoyed drawing and naming different parts of the instrument. This week they played on open strings. Some of our most talented string players who already play string instruments have been mentoring their classmates and have been offering Mr. Doherty tips on how to improve his technique too!
Year 5 have been fascinated by Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. They have consolidated their learning of instruments of the orchestra by linking them with characters from the story. This week they are composing their own melodies to create a story.
Year 6 are learning about the Planets by Gustav Holst and are this week focusing on different types of texture. In addition to analysing the texture of different movements from the suite, they are playing themes from the Planets on keyboards and creating their own arrangements focusing on different textural devices.
Year 8 students are currently working on melodic composition, using the stunningly memorable themes from Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor (1st movement) as a stimulus.
In Year 9, students are continuing to study the Blues and have gained useful ideas for improvising by watching Juilliard musicians improvise impressively by using only a limited series of notes online. They are now learning Blue Monk by Thelonious Monk and are learning about chromatic scales and transposition.
Year 12 students are studying the Baroque period and focusing on the works of J.S. Bach this week. They are excited about the forthcoming visit from a world-class cellist and Bach specialist from the Juilliard school this week and hope to hear her play in their very own classroom!
