Developing and Supporting Our Children

Break times are learning times for children as they get to develop the important social skills and independence that are so necessary for a successful life.

At school they get the opportunity to meet and mix with many children and adults and get opportunities to learn how to get on with others, how to ‘give and take’ and how to make and keep friends.

Learning how to get on with others is not always a smooth journey. Many parents know how unhappy their child can become when they fall out with friends. It can be a hard call! However, just as children learn and progress academically, so they do socially.

At BISS Puxi we recognise and take seriously our responsibility in supporting the children’s social development. We talk in classes and assemblies about respect for others, about how to be a good friend and we have high expectations about how to behave towards each other.  When friends fall out we use solution-focussed strategies that help both parties find ways to sort situations and learn from the experience. We encourage children to seek their own problem solving strategies.  Questions are asked such as: ‘What went wrong?’  ‘How will you fix it?’ ‘What could you have done to avoid it?’ We want the children to have confidence to be responsible for their own behaviour and also have confidence to deal with the behaviour with others. And this happens throughout the school; from Pre Nursery, where realising that there is more than ‘me’ in the world can be a challenge; to Year 6, where friendship groups and ‘belonging’ are so important.

All in all there are good times and there can occasionally be bad times for most children and this is a normal part of growing up. Children get on best when the adults around them work together and support them. Please let us know if you feel your child is not coping or unhappy; sometimes just a chat to share information can make a difference; they feel cared for, supported and more positive.   

Remember children deserve to be happy and happy children make the best learners!
