The challenge involved the children making a geodesic dome structure out of paper and masking tape. This structure could then be used as a basic shelter. In class, the children had previously been learning about settlements and found out that water, food and shelter were three of our basic human needs.
The children discussed the importance of collaboration and teamwork and were then put into groups to complete the activity. They had to use their reading skills to carefully understand the instructions before embarking on the best strategy for success.
The children also had to use their mathematical knowledge of measuring in order to make a sturdy base and supporting struts. Throughout the process children had to monitor and evaluate how the structure was looking and decide if they needed to alter the position of any of the parts. Groups were allowed 3 'teacher lifelines' where they could ask a teacher for support or explanations. Alongside this, special certificates were awarded to teams who demonstrated outstanding collaboration, communication and high quality building skills.
It was an extremely exciting start to our Themed Learning topic this term and all of children enjoyed the challenge of this hands on approach to learning.
