IB Diploma News

We have now reached the point where Year 13 students have finished their normal lessons and are on examination leave. The first papers (Business Management) started earlier today which is slightly earlier than IB exams have traditionally started.

Next week’s examinations include the second Business Management paper, Biology, Economics, English, Mathematics and Computer Science.

Even though formal lessons have now finished for Year 13, their teachers will continue to work hard to support them right up until their final examinations. Individual teachers are offering a number of revision sessions during the examination period, while students will always be able to come in to school to study. Teachers will often be available during the normal lesson time slots, though given that they will be doing some exam invigilation, we advise students to check in advance for specific times they would be available.

Meanwhile, Year 12 students are also starting to think about examinations with around four weeks to go to until their end of year tests, which begin on 31st May. From that point on, the remainder of Year 12 will be very intensive with Group 4 projects, TOK Presentations and, of course, the Cambodia trip. We strongly advise students to spend the next four weeks making sure they are generally on top of other elements of their Diploma Programme such as the Extended Essay, CAS reflections and assignments in all of their subjects.

Pastoral News

As the year 13 students start their exams the year 12 students will be starting to plan  for their own internal exams at the end of May. As much as there is a lot going on for the year 12 students, with internal assessments and the beginning of the extended essay, students must organise their time well in order to make progress in their study towards the exams. Creating a schedule for the week, including the homework and revision they will do and on which days and times, is important so that students feel structured and accountable for their time. The sooner students do this the less stressed they will feel closer to the exams. This is a good practice for the mock exams in November where they will be in a similar situation. After the end of year exams students can review their schedules and make adjustments based on what they think worked and what didn't. Good luck!

Year 12 students have now been arranged into groups for Cambodia and are planning their teaching activities for the Indochina Starfish Foundation Schools.  A reminder to students and parents that the process of applying for a Cambodian visa can start now.  The e-visa can be obtained through this link.

This week, Katherina Stierhof from Year 12 shares some reflections on her CAS programme:

Year 12 students are now well into their third and final term of the academic year. With tasks and deadlines now springing up more often it may almost be a reassurance that our CAS programme still continues on, continuously offering new opportunities to expand our horizons. Students seem to have settled into a routine, knowing what to expect and what is expected of them. However, the word routine often can conjure ideas of a repetitive activity that may easily turn into a task that demands to be completed. Rather, the students have settled into the routine of continuously challenging themselves to find new ways in which they may incorporate their CAS into daily life. CAS has turned from a task into an opportunity where students may learn, explore and discover new aspects about themselves and how they may approach certain situations. In school it is incredibly easy to be caught up in  pressure, often inflicted upon oneself, to strive towards certain grades, meet certain expectations or attain a certain level. While this may indeed be useful for the academic aspects of the student’s future life, a focus on this may also limit them and deny the access to the tools to deal with personal challenges and the world around us. CAS ties the loose links between the person and the academic material. In participating in creative tasks, active tasks and service to other people, we as students are constantly learning on an individual level on how to actively solve or overcome challenges. As the end of year exams are approaching fast, CAS helps us keep in mind that not only the grade at the end matters but also to reflect on how we to the point that we are at and that possibly problems or even failure is not a disaster but something that helps us learn even more. In our experiences and especially during the CAS project that we currently are completing, we have already completed many unexpected challenges that are thrown in our way, but during this year many f us have learnt that these challenges are not meant to deter us but to help us in growing and our awareness of ourselves and everyone around us.

IB Diploma Programme Exams

With the IB exams beginning on Friday I want to reiterate a message I gave to Year 13 in assembly last week. Our job in the IB team is to make each exam day as stress free as possible so if there is any problem then please come and talk to any of us and we will try our best to help.

As well as hard work, effective planning will also help you get the best results. Plan your revision over the exam period and plan to sleep enough so you are fresh in the morning for the exam. A lack of sleep will have a negative effect on your exams!

IB Diploma Programme Deadlines

All deadlines for year 12 and year 13 students are accessible through their Managebac account by looking at the calendar. We encourage parents to ask their son/daughter to show them this calendar so they can help their children to plan their work.

Year 13 have now finished their internal assessments and will focus on revision from now on.

IB Learner Profile

We have spread out written assessments for students to help them become more balanced. We have experienced that too many assignments in year 13 can mean students can lose focus of on the important aspects of their lives. We have therefore moved deadlines to make sure year 12 students will have the majority of their Extended Essay and Mathematics internal assessment completed by the end of the summer holiday. We will be explaining the importance of this to students who have already heard from year 13 students that this is a good development of the programme and is something extremely helpful.

Explaining the Diploma Programme

Each week, we shall be focusing on one particular aspect of the Diploma Programme. This week I shall write about the ‘Request for Results Service’.

The IBO has a process for getting final examination results to universities in July – this is known as the ‘Request for Results Service’. This involves us putting information into an online system (known as IBIS) about which universities students would like their results sent to. This results in emails going out to the universities from the IBO to confirm final results.

The deadline for us to put in this information is May 1st (for most university systems) or July 1st (for Canada and the United States) and we have therefore already been collecting and inputting this data. The IBO limits the number of requests to six institutions worldwide with a maximum of one from the US and one from Canada. Centralised admissions systems (such as UCAS in the UK) count as just one request.

After these deadlines, there is still a process where official IBO transcripts can be sent to universities at the request of the student themselves using the IBO public website. However, since this has a cost attached, we recommend that students take advantage of the free Request for Results Service via the school.
