The Winter Institute Programme is now on its 7th edition and is a partnership between the Shanghai Theatre Academy and four American Universities: Brown, Yale, Columbia and NYU. It consists of an intensive 12 days of workshops, lectures and seminars on theatre-making and performing.

Our students watched a variety of scenes performed in Mandarin and English.  These were  comprised of a movement ‘open class’, scenes from O’Neill’s “The Hairy Ape” and a Peking Opera adaptation of “Miss Julie” by Strindberg. We were all very impressed by the quality of the performances and the innovative ways to create new work from real life material. A group of students from the institute were sent to ‘into the field’, to the Jing’an Temple area, to study and collect stories and characters for an original piece of theatre. Although the sketches performed were in their early stages, our drama students found them very inspiring for their upcoming IGCSE devised pieces and IB Theatre solo performances.
