Air Quality

Air filtration mask design competition

As we enter the winter months in Shanghai, we tend to see an increase in levels of pollution across the city. This is my sixth year in Shanghai and anecdotally, I can say that I have experienced an improvement in air quality levels during this period, largely due to new regulations implemented by the Shanghai government.

Masks

Despite this, we take the safety of our school community seriously and in the last two years have worked alongside parents to implement a new Air Quality Policy; at the same time we have made significant changes to the filtration of air inside the school that has led to readings of PM2.5 of zero in most parts of the school. This is due to a state-of-the-art pressurised system supplied by Charlie Thomson and his team at Environment Assured. We are very grateful to him and continue to work together to maintain the air quality inside our buildings.

We encourage our children and families to wear masks outdoors on those days when the air quality is poor. To raise awareness and engage interest for our students, we’ve recently held a competition to create the design for the masks that you can buy from Chatterbox Café. In the gallery you can see the creative and imaginative designs that our pupils from across the school produced, all of whom receive recognition for their achievements through Principals’ Commendations.

There is, as they say, only one winner and so I am delighted to announce that Victoria Lee in 7S, with her ‘Lion’ design is this year’s winner. Victoria’s design was beautifully drawn and will look great on a mask. We are working with the Cambridge Mask Company to transfer Victoria’s design from paper to final product and look forward to showing the whole community when the process is complete.

There were many thoughtful and colourful designs entered into the competition, from both Primary and Secondary students and we would like to thank and congratulate all our students who entered. Many students also told us the reasons behind their designs, demonstrating they had thought carefully about the message behind clean air and how we can all work to protect the environment.

We have also taken note of feedback from some of our Secondary students, who told us that they wanted to be able to buy a darker, plain-coloured mask and we have ordered a limited number of ‘standard colour’ masks which will soon be in stock in Chatterbox.

Please join us in congratulating our winner Victoria, and our highly commended entries from Mads Mellerup, Celine Wang, Chloe Tan, Naho Sasaki, Ya-ge Sun, Ryan Kim, Elina Wong, Ryan Joo, Alicia Wang and Raina Stribbling.

I’d like to personally thank Catherine Lambert, who many of you will know, for her help as a parent at the school in progressing our thinking and in helping to implement the infrastructure in place that helps all of our children.
