During International week we will have a focus on the continent of Africa so, in preparation for our learning theme next week will revolve around a story set in Africa: Handa’s Surprise. This will provide an introduction to the theme of Africa as well as continuing to explore books and stories. We will find out why Handa was surprised, and discuss what the animals did. We will look at the illustrations in the book, and notice how the setting is different to Shanghai. We will sing songs related to the story, and also investigate different fruits during the week. In our cooking session we will cut up fruit to make delicious fruit kebabs.
Key Vocabulary: Africa, fruit, orange, tangerine, pineapple, guava, avodaco, passion fruit, favourite, surprise. What is your favourite fruit?
Understanding the World
Fruit is such a colourful and interesting subject to investigate and we are looking forward to exploring it in many different ways during the week. We will use all of our senses when we feel, smell, look and taste different fruits. We will see if we can find pips or seeds inside and talk about these, some fruits have skin, or peel, some are hard, some are soft. Can the children tell us which one they like the best? How many children like strawberries/apples/bananas the most? There will also be opportunities to create observational fruit paintings, print with fruit and buy and sell fruit in our role play fruit shop.
Key Vocabulary: skin, peel, juice, pip, seed, stone, how many, count, more, most, a lot.
Our theme is going to be Handa’s surprise according to the English topic. We will introduce fruits from the story. Children will talk about the colours, shapes, taste and which fruit is their favourite. We also tell a Chinese traditional story about a fox and grapes. What can we learn from this story?
