Learning Theme – ‘We’re going on a bear hunt!’

We had a wonderful time at our teddy bear picnic last week, eating sandwiches and playing parachute games.

This week we are going on a bear hunt! This is wonderfully repetitive story about a family who go looking for the bear. They have to go through grass, water, mud, the dark forest, a snow storm and tiptoe all the way to the end of the dark gloomy cave where they find the bear.

This story will provide a great opportunity for acting out and retelling the story. We will set up the classrooms as the background of the book. We will have some swishy grass, a splish-splash river, squelchy mud, a forest, a snow storm and a cave. We will accompany the children on this journey through the classrooms and we will encourage them to retell and repeat the story.

Communication and Language

We will practice the sounds in the book - splish-splash! and we will make a variety of sounds using our voices, our bodies, and percussion instruments. We will listen out for diferrent environment sounds and try to guess what they are.

Understanding the World

There will be sensory areas in every classroom, encouraging the children to explore the elements from the book. We will have a water tub and a tub with mud. How does the mud feel? Would you like to walk through it? We will have leaves and twigs for our forest element and a snow tray. Outside in the playground we will set up a Barefoot Bear Hunt trail, where the children will actually be able to walk through water, mud and ice.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

Many thanks again.
