Week Beginning 11 May 2015

The children have amazed us this week with their independence when lining up in the mornings. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.

Reminder

  • Wednesday 27 May at 9am: Transition meeting for Reception to Year One.
  • Plea for spare clothes. We are very short of spare knickers and pants. If you have any that you no longer need, please can you send them into school so that we have a stock here. If you borrow any please return as soon as possible!

Learning Theme:  Changes!

The children came up with some fantastic ideas of things that change last week, from changing shoes, losing teeth as we grow to building a new car from lots of different parts. They even started to notice the differences between things that change naturally and things that we make change!

We will have two Big Questions this week: What happens next? What if?

On Monday the children will discover a mysterious hole in some of the plants. Who could it be? Then we will share the classic story: The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I know that lots of you know it at home and will be able to share it again, if you do not have it, please click here.

We will use the story as a chance to practise sequencing linked to the changes that happen to the him as he grows, encouraging the children to link the events with connectives such as first, then and next. Then the children will have the opportunity to demonstrate their understaning of the story sequence by introducing their own ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar', and framing a story around how their character can change! What if it was a ??? What would happen then? We will also use this opportunity to refresh the children knowledge of the days of the week, encouraging them to fill in a simple diary.

Alongside this the children will sequence the lifecycle of a butterfly and talk about the changes they notice. We hope to have our own caterpillars to observe and study.

Development Outcomes

ELG The world: They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.

ELG+: Children know that the environment and living things are influenced by human activity. They can describe some actions which people in their own community do that help to maintain the area they live in.

ELG Reading: They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

ELG+: They can describe the main events in the simple stories they have read.

Phonics

Sharks

This week the sharks will learn the digraphs ur (surf) and er(surfer). We will recap ar (start the car) and or (zoom into orbit). We will also continue to practise ai,ee,igh,oa and oo.

Octopus

We will review ch sh ng th and add ai (rain, paid, main).

Jellyfish

We will be working on simple words out loud, hearing and saying the main sounds we can hear e.g. vet becomes v-e-t. We will focus on writing the letters quickly so that we can use them more automatically when writing simple words.

Pufferfish

We will review previously learnt sounds and recapping ay sound from last week. Then we will move onto ou (out, about, proud and cloud).

Mathematics

The children have loved doubling and are trying hard to remember the doubles facts. We found a very funny song that will help with this, please click here.

This week we will be looking and describing symmetricalpatterns- noticing how the two halves are the same on both sides. We will cut fruit into halves and match halves, using a mirror to check that we have found the right half!
