Week Beginning 2 November 2015

Parent teacher conferences are on Tuesday 3 and Thursday 5 this week. Your teacher will have sent the slip back with the times. If you have not received your meeting time please speak to your child’s teacher directly.

MESSAGES

  • Book Week dress up day is this Friday, 6 November. The theme this year is Weird and Wonderful. Have  fun coming up with a costume!
  • Uniform:  Now that it is colder in the mornings please remember that children should not be wearing leggings, boots or hoodies.  They should be wearing school jumpers/cardigans/fleeces and NOT non-uniform versions.  Information is available on the Primary Parent Handbook on the website.
  • Book Fair:  This year the Book Fair, where you can buy books, will take place in school from Thursday 19-Saturday 21 November.  More information to follow.
  • Visiting Poet: Nick Tozeck will be working with children on Monday 9-Tuesday 10 November.

LEARNING THEME: Weird and Wonderful for Book Week!

The theme of Book Week this year is Weird and Wonderful. The Reception Cubs will read and explore the story of  ‘The Giant Jam Sandwich’, by John Vernon Lord and Janet Burroway. There will be lots of weird and wonderful book themed activities happening during the week! Remember to look out for them!

COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE

LITERACY

Through the story ‘The Giant Jam Sandwich’, the children will develop their pre-reading skills; we will look at the cover of the book for clues as to what the story will be about and how this town came to make such a giant sandwich! As we read the story, we will develop our descriptive vocabulary and identify some of the rhyming pairs that we hear. We will practise our writing skills by listing some strange creatures that we could trap in a sandwich.

Key Vocabulary: giant, jam, sandwich, wasps, trap, bread, strawberry, raspberry.

Development Outcomes:

Continue a rhyming string.

Hear and says the initial sound in words.

Use vocabulary and forms of speech that are increasingly influenced by their experiences of books.

Enjoy an increasing range of books.

Attempt to write short sentences in meaningful contexts.

Use some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence.

PHONICS

Pufferfish- This week we will learn new sounds ai and ee. We will revise all Phase 3 sounds learned so far and continue to blend and segment for reading and writing.

Sharks- The Shark group will begin Phase 3 and learn the sounds j, v, w and x.  They will also practise all letters/sounds learnt so far, as well as learn an alphabet song.  They will learn to write the words no, go, the, and, to and I.        

Octopus- The octopuses will be learning the sounds j, l and f next week as well as becoming expert blenders!

Jellyfish-  Jelly fish will be learning the sounds h, f, and b this week. We will continue to practise blending and segmenting the sounds learned so far to read and write words.

Starfish- Star fish will be using all the sounds taught so far and working hard to read VC and CVC words. We will say each sound and blend them together to build up words.

MATHS

Using our story as a stimulus, we will focus on estimating how many objects we can see and identifying the number. We will also develop our understanding of 1 more and 1 less.

Key Vocabulary: estimate, guess, more, less, one more, one less, how many.

Development Outcomes:

Estimate how many objects they can see and checks by counting them.

Use the language of ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ to compare two sets of objects.

Find one more or one less from a group of up to five objects, then ten objects.

MANDARIN

We are going to introduce some classic stories that link to the book week. In these stories we will keep learning about the position words in mandarin and we will review colors, shapes and numbers that we learned before.

Key words:  big  大 (da)   small  小 (xiao)    middle 中(zhong)    story 故事(gushi )

DUTCH

Hecko, de goochelaar van Circus Rondo, is fantastisch.  Hij kan echt toveren!  Dat wil clown Tito ook wel kunnen.  Maar met zijn eigen hoedje lukt het helemaal niet.  Zal hij Hecko vragen om het hem te leren?  We leren net zoals Tito toveren en rijmen onze eigen toverspreuken bij elkaar.   Wat zit er allemaal in de hoed van Hecko?
