Week Beginning 1 February 2016

As part of our Chinese New Year celebrations, students are invited to come to school wearing something red or Chinese costume, on Friday 5th February.

MESSAGES

  • There will be NO PRIMARY ECA PROGRAMME ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY, NOR PRIMARY BISS LIONS SWIMMING ON THURSDAY. BISSCAP and CISSA sessions will run as normal.  Bus children will go home on the earlier school buses on these days.
  • Uniform:  Now that it is colder in the mornings please remember that children should not be wearing leggings, boots or hoodies.  They should be wearing school jumpers/cardigans/fleeces and NOT non-uniform versions.  Information is available on the Primary Parent Handbook on the website.

LITERACY

In Literacy this week we will be publishing our exciting and informative reports on Volcanoes. The children have been researching in a variety of ways; using videos, textbooks, guided reading books and gathering information on the internet, so are now ready to present their own ideas on paper.  We have identified the features of non-fiction texts and want to use all of these skills in our final piece. They have learnt techniques for note-taking, effective paragraphs and technical vocabulary and will be putting all of these ideas together. Our spelling focus for the week will be to use the technique of identifying shorter words within longer words as an aid to spelling, as well as identifying some exception words to learn in an exciting way.

MATHS

This week we shall be covering time. The children will review both analogue and digital formats and be introduced to the 24 hour clock. They will solve problems converting from hours to minutes, minutes to seconds. They will practise reading timetables and learn to calculate simple time durations. Being an international school, many children will have significant experience of time zones and we will use this to deepen their understanding.

THEMED LEARNING

Students will be celebrating Chinese New Year by partcipataing in traditional activities including marbles, rope-skipping and shuttlecock kicking. Children will recognise how many modern pastimes have their roots in ancient Chinese traditional culture that dates back 5,000 years. These will ge lead by our talented learning assistance.

PSHCE

Students will continue to discuss conflict resolution and consider alternative approaches to dealing with problems.

COMPUTING

Over the course of the next few weeks, classes will work with Lego Wedo equipment. This is designed to teach modelling and programming skills to children. This year the focus will be on learning and exploring the mechanical aspects of the model and determining how they can change instructions to improve and develop the movement. The children will be encouraged to write their own programs and use their understanding to create models which work in similar ways to the examples.

DIGITAL LITERACY

This week we will be looking at the ‘App’ ‘Padlet’ to reflect on how it can be used as a tool to explain our learning.

Dutch

Koken, bakken, braden...
