We will be attending our next Fun Football event on Thursday 14 May at SAS Puxi. It is always lovely to have parents come along to support, so feel free to come along. Matches will be played between 10:00 and 12:50.

Literacy

In Literacy this week we will be continuing our investigation of the fascinating genre of Science Fiction. We will be using the seminal text ‘The Demon Headmaster’ by Gillian Cross to help us understand the structure and pattern of Science Fiction, and how the juxtaposition of the fantastical with the mundane creates stories we can really empathise with. We shall also investigate the way Gillian Cross begins her story with a few Science Fiction elements but inserts clues to the reader that all is not as it seems. This will culminate in the students writing the introduction to their own Science Fiction story.

Maths

In Maths this week, students will be moving on to explore statistics. We will review the different kinds of tables and graphs and learn how to interpret the data stored in them before collecting all sorts of exciting data. We will then move on to creating graphs to show the discrete and continuous data which we have collected throughout the week.

Themed Learning

‘Space’

In Themed Learning this week, we will be introducing the history of space exploration through looking at the Space Race. What was the Space Race? How did the technologies of the USA and USSR compare? How were the two countries portrayed at home and in other countries around the world?  What is the difference when comparing similar technologies from each country?

PSHCE

In PSHCE this term we will be looking at teamwork and collaborative working.  We will focus further on fostering new relationships, creating rules and expectations for the group and how to work together successfully.

Het nieuwe thema ‘Freek in het wild’ is gestart. De leerlingen van Year 5 en 6 verdiepen zich in het schrijven van een biografie gericht op iemands specialiteit (werk, opleiding, talent). De leerlingen van Year 3 en 4 leren een gedetailleerde beschrijving te geven van een dier.

Bij spelling worden in Year 3 en 4 de volgende categorieën geoefend: -ig, -lijk, eind –d en de prefixen be-, ge-, ver-. verkleinwoorden met –je, -tje, -etje en meervouden op –eren.

Year 5/6  Spanish -  Ms Ormond

This week the students will be reintroduced to the AIM program where gestures are used to introduce and reinforce vocabulary. These visual and kinesthetic props allow new words and associated grammar to pass directly to meaning, so there is no need to translate back into the first language. We then will begin working on short plays in smaller groups using these gestures while speaking in Spanish. We will be discussing, practising and performing these plays over the next several weeks. The short plays are fables that most children already know in another language, for example, Los Tres Canchitos (The Three Little Pigs), El Gato y La Luna (The Cat and the Moon), and El Principe Sapo (The Frog Prince).  The children will have opportunities to practice their oral Spanish, use previously learned vocabulary, and be introduced to new words.

Year 5 French - Mrs Rae

Next week we will continue our unit on “Ratatouille.’ We will be thinking about different types of food and recalling the vocabulary to name them. We will also be making our own ratatouille in the cooking rooms and writing up the cooking instructions in French.
Homework: Go onto www.linguascope.com and find the L’Alimentation section and try completing les legumes and les ustensiles de cuisine section.

Next week we will continue our unit on “Ratatouille.’ We will be describing the personalities of the characters in the film in more detail and learning about food while we prepare to make ratatouille on Monday 18 May.
