This week in Literacy we shall begin investigating the story of Anne Frank. We shall use a range of resources including photos, secondary accounts and her diary itself. Using this, we will be able to pull together a picture of Anne’s life, from the happy early years before Nazi rule and then her escape to Holland, years in hiding and eventual capture. We will then use this information to write our own biographies of this inspiring but tragic figure.
In maths we will be review everything we have learnt this year, considering where our strengths and weaknesses lie and setting ourselves targets for the next term. The children will be taught how to critically evaluate what they already know and what their main priority for learning is. We shall also combine this review with a range of mental maths activities to help develop the children’s speed of calculation and rapid times-tables recall.
In Themed Learning we will be using our skills in Science to begin investigating the physics of motion through the air. The children will conduct a practical experiment to see how far they can catapult a ping-pong ball across the playground using a range of resources and their own ingenuity. They will then explore the physics behind their successes and failures, looking at why some designs work better than others and what forces are at work. Finally, they will apply what they have learnt to their designs and try to improve them and see if they can beat their initial results.
In PSHCE we will be discussing our feelings at a time when several children are moving on to new schools in new countries and preparing ourselves to forge new friendships with new arrivals. We will discuss methods of communication so we can stay in touch with our friends.
